What is Spalting

The partial decay which gives the wood dark contrasting lines and streaks where fungus has attacked the wood.

Spalting is any form of wood coloration caused by fungi. Primarily found in dead trees, spalting can also occur in living trees under stress. Spalting can cause weight loss and strength loss in the wood. The unique coloration and patterns of spalted wood are what make it so desirable.

Spalted Maple is not a specific species of Maple, but rather a general description of any type of Maple that has begun the initial stages of decay, then dried preventing further decay.
